‘Fortune Favors the Bald’ as Rays shave their heads to raise funds and bring awareness to pediatric cancer research.

Tampa, Fla. – March 6, 2013 – Tampa Bay Rays Manager Joe Maddon, players, coaches, executives and staff will shave their heads as part of the 2013 Bright House Networks Cut for a Cure Charity Challenge presented by Carrabba’s Italian Grill benefiting the Pediatric Cancer Foundation. Last year, more than 70 Rays shaved and raised $7,568. Their goal this year is to raise $20,000.

“We hope to make this a Rays’ tradition every spring,” said Maddon.  “While this is, of course, really about supporting the kids and their families, it served as a great moment for our organization, perhaps one of the most important ever, because we all stood up together for a cause so meaningful. And it is something we are excited to introduce to our new players each year. As an organization, we are proud to support organizations and institutions like the Pediatric Cancer Foundation.”

WHEN: Friday, March 15, 11:30 a.m., prior to Rays-Phillies game at 1:05 p.m.

WHERE: Charlotte Sports Park, 2300 El Jobean Road, Port Charlotte, FL.

WHY: To show support for a player or participant, the public is encouraged to donate online at pcfcutforacure.org through Friday, May 3, or on-site March 15. Attendees at the shaving will also have the opportunity to shave with the Rays for a $100 donation. T-shirts featuring Maddon’s “Fortune Favors the Bald” slogan will be on sale at the March 15 Rays game.
